Robert Leighton - Definition and Overview

Robert Leighton (1611-1684), son of Dr. Alexander Leighton, was a Scottish prelate. A notable Presbyterian preacher, he signed Solemn League and Covenant in 1643. In 1661 he accepted the bishopric of Dunblane, and where he thereafter sought a basis for union of Presbyterianism and episcopacy. He died on the 25th of June, 1684, and was buried in Horsted Heynes, Sussex. In his will, he bequeathed his collection of 1,400 volumes and a hundred pounds for the erection of Leighton Library in Dunblane.
