Nassau Hall, 1850; studied law and was admitted to practice in 1853; rem. to Elizabeth, NJ in 1856. Served on the City Council from 1868 to 1873; elected Surrogate of Union County in 1862; appointed Presiding Judge of the Court of Common Pleas and County Courts in 1878. In 1884, elected to Congress, and two years later elected Governor of NJ and served one term. in 1880, appointed Vice Chancellor of the State, and on June 26, 1894, Judge of the Courts of Errors and Appeals. Regarded as a man of sound judgment and very influential. He m. 1 Oct 1857, Mary E.
