Robert Torrens - Definition


Robert Torrens was one of the earliest Premiers of South Australia from when it was first a colony before it became a state of the commonwealth of Australia. The beautiful Torrens River which flows through the capital of South Australia, Adelaide, is believed to have been named after this man who played a significant part in the early leadership and development of the great State of South Australia. Robert Torrens succeeded John Baker as Premier and was himself succeeded by Richard Hanson. A large number of men have since gone on to become Premier of South Australia, those men including Thomas Reynolds, George Waterhouse, Francis Dutton, Henry Ayers who Ayer's Rock is named after although it has been renamed by Aboriginal custodians to Uluru, Arthur Blyth, John Hart, Henry Strangways, James Boucat, John Colton, William Morgan, John Bray, John Downer who is the grandfather of Howard Government Foreign Affairs Minister The Honourable Alexander Downer, Thomas Playford of whose surname is intrinsically associated with South Australia, John Cockburn, Frederick Holder, Charles Kingston who was one of the Australian Fathers of Federation, Vaiben Solomon, John Jenkins, Richard Butler, Thomas Price, Archibald Peake, Henry Barwell, John Gunn, Lionel Hill, Robert Richards, Frank Walsh, Don Dunstan who revolutionised South Australia throughout the 1960s and 1970s with his different approach to government, Des Corcoran, David Tonkin, John Bannon who lead the State to the financial brink before standing aside, Lynn Arnold who has in recent years returned to prominence as the head of the Australian division of Worldvision although he has now relinquished this role, Dean Brown, John Olsen, Rob Kerin and the current incumbent Mike Rann.
