"Roll-playing" is a derogatory term used in role-playing game (RPG) circles to denote a style of play that suppresses role-playing to follow a slavish obsession with rolling dice and applying rules. Dungeons & Dragons is an example of an RPG that, with three editions, three core rulebooks, and six types of polyhedral dice, has become synonymous with "roll playing".
