The Rookie of the Year award is traditionally given to first-time professional athletes who have demonstrated superb athleticism in their sport. The honor is awarded to members of Major League Baseball, the National Basketball Association, the National Hockey League, and the National Football League.

The NFL awards Offensive and Defensive Rookie of the Year awards. Until 1996, the NFL awarded NFC and AFC Rookie of the Year awards.
