Roosevelt Island Tramway - Definition and Overview

The Roosevelt Island Tramway is an aerial tramway (suspended cable car) in New York, New York, United States of America, connecting Roosevelt Island to Manhattan.

It was built in 1976 by the Swiss company Vonroll. It was originally built as a temporary transportation solution as the subway to the island had not yet been completed. As the subway project ran behind schedule, the "Tram" became more popular and was converted into a permanent facility.

It has since carried over 30 million passengers. It travels a distance of 3,100 feet (one km) at an average speed of 16 mph (28 km/h) in 4 1/2 minutes.
