Roti is the Hindi and Urdu word for bread. In Gujarati it is rotli.
Generically, the word roti may refer to many different kinds of bread, such as chapati, phulka and puri, each with its specific name. It is usually used to refer to the round flat unleavened breads more typical of southern India than the yeasted naan breads originating in the north-west of the subcontinent and central Asia. It is sometimes referred to as the baloon bread by westerners.
Roti is made most often from wheat flour but other grains may be used as well. Like breads around the world, roti is a staple accompaniment to other foods, maybe spread with ghee(clarified butter), used as a scoop or rolled up with a filling.
Roti also features prominently in the diet of many West Indian countries, although the rotis from these areas tend to differ from South Indian roti.
