The Royal Liberty of Havering was created in 1465 by a royal charter granted by King Edward IV to the area surrounding the royal manor house of Havering Palace at Havering-atte-Bower.
The charter gave residents of the area freedom from taxation and other benefits.
In 1892 the Royal Liberty of Havering was dissolved by order of parliament.
The modern day London Borough of Havering takes its name from the area.
