Russian Turkistan - Definition and Overview

Turkistan Krai (Turkestan Krai, Туркестанский край), also known as Russian Turkistan, was a subdivision (krai) of the late Imperial Russia, part of Turkistan.

It was annexed to Russia in 1867. Initially it was a Governorate General, later made into a krai, that existed in 1886-1917.

After the Russian Revolution, a Turkistan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic of the Soviet Union was created, which was eventually split into the Kazakh SSR (Kazakhstan), Kyrgyz SSR (Kyrgyzstan), Tajik SSR (Tajikistan), Turkmen SSR (Turkmenistan) and Uzbek SSR (Uzbekistan). After the collapse of the Soviet Union, these republics gained their independence.
