Established as a pit village in the former Durham coalfield, Ryhope has gradually become a southern suburb of the City of Sunderland as a result of expanding urbanisation. Ryhope is home to the Cherry Knowles Hospital, the main mental health services complex for the Wearside area. The main A19 trunk road runs close to the village.
