Sabae, Fukui - Definition

Sabae (鯖江市; -shi) is a city located in Fukui, Japan.

As of 2003, the city has an estimated population of 65,759 and the density of 775.92 persons per km². The total area is 84.75 km².

The city was founded on January 15, 1955.

Sabae is one of the largest manufacturing centers of eyeglass frames in Japan. In 1995, the city was host to the World Gymnastics Championships. (The locals will be sure to remind you of this.)

Nishiyama koen (West Mountain Park) is particularly beautiful in springtime, when hundreds of cherry trees blossom. The effect turns the park into a glorious island of pink blossoms in an otherwise drab industrialized city.
