The administrative headquarters of this district is Himmatnagar, about 80 km from Ahmedabad. Sabarkantha has a population of over 2 million in its 7,390 km² area.

Sabarkantha borders with Rajasthan state in the Northeast, Banaskantha and Mehsana districts in West, Gandhinagar and Kheda districts in South and Panchmahals district in the East.
