Sadie Benning is a feminist artist.
She first made her name in the early 1990s as a teenage video maker in her home state of Wisconsin. Her earliest works, made from the time she was 15, were shot with the FisherPrice Pixelvision camera, which recorded rough black and white video images onto regular audio tape, and dealt with her experiences in finding and refining her identiy as a lesbian. Her work was included in the prestigious Whitney Biennial. Later in the decade, she joined Le Tigre, the feminist post-rock band headed by ex-Bikini Kill singer/guitarist Kathleen Hanna. She has since left the band.
