Saint Albans, Queens - Definition and Overview |
St. Albans is a residential community in the borough of Queens, New York City around the intersection of Linden Blvd and Farmers Blvd., southeast of Jamaica and northeast of Springfield Gardens and Laurelton. Many famous jazz musicians used to live in some of the large houses there (particularly in the western section known as Addisleigh Park).
This area was named in 1899 after a village in England called St Albans, which itself was named after a martyred Christian, Saint Alban. The housing here consists mostly of detached, one and two-family homes. Linden Boulevard is the major shopping street. The Veterans Administration St. Albans Primary and Extended Care Center (formerly known as St. Albans Naval Hospital) is located on the site of a former golf course.
The area was earlier known as Francis' Farms, likely the farmland of the family of Francis Lewis, a signer of the Declaration of Independence.
