According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.3 km² (2.8 mi²). 7.2 km² (2.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.36% is water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,704 people, 1,504 households, and 955 families residing in the city. The population density is 512.6/km² (1,326.4/mi²). There are 1,629 housing units at an average density of 225.4/km² (583.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 93.79% White, 0.27% African American, 0.54% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.43% from other races, and 4.67% from two or more races. 0.92% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,504 households out of which 30.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.7% are married couples living together, 12.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.5% are non-families. 33.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.32 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the city the population is spread out with 25.4% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 24.4% from 25 to 44, 18.4% from 45 to 64, and 25.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 88.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $24,629, and the median income for a family is $29,952. Males have a median income of $24,962 versus $20,030 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,509. 17.2% of the population and 13.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 26.8% of those under the age of 18 and 11.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
