Salida is a city located in Chaffee County, Colorado. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 5,504. It is the county seat of Chaffee County6.
Locally, the town's name is pronounced "Suh-LYE-duh" although Salida is so named, for being the 'exit' from the Brown Canyon of the Arkansas River. In Spanish, the town's name means 'exit' and would be pronounced "Sah-LEE-dah". Local pronunciation of the name of the community north of Salida, Buena Vista, is "Byoona Vissta", often shortened to "Byoony".
The most prominent business in Salida is Whitewater rafting, kayaking and outfitting, particularly on the Arkansas River.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.7 km² (2.2 mi²). 5.7 km² (2.2 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,504 people, 2,504 households, and 1,449 families residing in the city. The population density is 957.3/km² (2,480.1/mi²). There are 2,748 housing units at an average density of 477.9/km² (1,238.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 92.66% White, 0.05% African American, 1.44% Native American, 0.38% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 3.29% from other races, and 2.16% from two or more races. 10.76% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,504 households out of which 25.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.9% are married couples living together, 8.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 42.1% are non-families. 35.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.15 and the average family size is 2.80.
In the city the population is spread out with 21.4% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 94.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $28,790, and the median income for a family is $38,240. Males have a median income of $30,447 versus $20,867 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,252. 14.8% of the population and 9.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 23.7% of those under the age of 18 and 13.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
