Sallins Sallins

Sallins - Definition

Sallins is a village in County Kildare, Ireland about three and half kilometres (two miles) from Naas. The village grew as a result of its position on both the Grand Canal and the main Dublin to Cork/Kerry/Limerick railway line. Historically, the major employer in the village, was the Odlum's Flour Mills. The canal near the village is popular for fishing and the nearby Leinster Aqueduct is the most notable landmark in the area.

The village's connection to the Irish railway network serves both Sallins itself, and neighbouring Naas, reflected by the station designation "Sallins and Naas". The station, originally known as "Sallins", was closed in 1963 but with the growth of Sallins and Naas as dormitory towns for Dublin, it was redeveloped and reopened as part of a commuter rail system (the Kildare "Arrow") in 1994. Originally a separate branch to Naas diverged from the mainline at Sallins.
