Salzkammergut - Definition and Overview

Salzkammergut is a resort area east of Salzburg, Austria, spanning the states of Upper Austria, Salzburg, and Styria. It was known originally for its salt mines.

It is home to lakes such as Attersee, Mondsee, Traunsee and Wolfgangsee and mountains such as the 3000-meter glacier-covered Mount Dachstein, part of the Dachstein limestone massif. Towns in the area include Bad Ischl (Emperor Franz Joseph's summer residence), Hallstatt, St. Wolfgang (location of the White Horse Inn), Gmunden, and Altaussee.
