Sambia Sambia

Sambia - Definition

Sambia or the Sambian Peninsula (Russian: semlyandskiy poluostrov, German: Samland) is the name of a peninsula in the Baltic Sea. It belonged to East Prussia for a long period and was originally populated by the Baltic tribe of Sambians. Now it is part of Russia's Kaliningrad Oblast and is mainly populated by Russians and Belarusians. In Sambia there are two famous seaside resorts: Zelenogradsk and Svetlogorsk.

Sambia is an area rich of amber near Kaliningrad (formerly Königsberg). Sambia was the last area where the Old Prussian language was spoken before it went extinct at the beginning of 18th century.

For thousands of years amber has been found at the Sambia coast and an Amber Road trade route has led from Prussia's "first city" of Truso to the Black Sea and further east.
