The San Andreas Observatory at Depth (SAFOD) is a National Science Foundation project located near the town of Parkfield, California that will drill down nearly 1.8 miles (3 km) into the San Andreas Fault zone.
The eventual goal of this project is to record data near the source of earthquakes by placing instruments within the bore hole. Rock and fluid samples collected during the drilling process will also be used to analyze changes in geochemistry around the fault zone before and after an earthqake. It is hoped that the development of instrumentation and analytic methods will lead to the ability to predict earthquakes.
