Now a picturesque, pre-Inca town that grew, over centuries, around an oasis in the Atacama desert in northern Chile. It is located east of Antofagasta, some 100 Km south east of Calama and the Chuquicamata copper mine, overlooking the Licancabur volcano. Its regionally-significant archeological museum (Museo Arqueológico R. P. Gustavo Le Paige (http://www.ucn.cl/museo/detalle.asp?tipo3)), with a large collection of mummies and other relics, and native ruins nearby, now attract increasing numbers of tourists interested in learning about pre-Hispanic cultures.
