Marin Academy

Marin Academy (MA) is a small private college preparatory high school of about 400 students situated at 1600 Mission Avenue. Once "San Rafael Military Academy," MA was founded in 1971 with a student body of 57.

The academic atmosphere is rigorous and though the school lacks a football team, the soccer team fills in and does quite well. What MA is really known for is its emphasis on visual and performing arts, as well as a tendency to admit students and hire faculty committed to progressive politics and social awareness.

Though every year the students of MA inevitably complain that the new incoming students are not as "MA" as previous classes, the spirit stays the same and the unique characteristics — minicourse, outings, innovative scheduling, required arts credits, community service, social justice, etc. — remain.
