Sango (珊瑚, "coral") is a character in the anime and manga series InuYasha.
Sango is a yōkai exterminator (退治屋, taijiya). She and the other taijiya of her village go to other villages in the region and kill the yōkai that are infesting or attacking them. Sango trained to be a taijiya from the moment she could walk. Her favorite weapon is a yōkai bone boomerang called Hiraikotsu (飛来骨).
Sango and her younger brother, Kohaku, go with their father and some other taijiya to a castle which is being attacked by a spider yōkai. The taijiya kill the spider, but it seems too easy. Suddenly, Kohaku begins killing all the other taijiya, including his father. Sango fights Kohaku and then sees that he's being controlled by a spider web. She sees that the web is also connected to the lord of the castle, who appears to be controlling it.
She then rushes at the lord and tries to kill him, but is stopped when the blade of Kohaku's kusari-gama slams into her back. The guards shoot Kohaku full of arrows as Sango watches, barely able to move. Sango crawls over to him, and he dies in her arms. Sango appears to die as well. The old lord's son then attacks and kills him; and when he is beheaded, a spider crawls out. The young Lord Kagewaki says that what happened to the taijiya was a tragedy and demands a proper burial for them.
Sango, who is not dead after all, digs her way out of the grave. The young lord finds her, takes her into his castle, and cares for her wounds. Naraku comes to Lord Kagewaki and tells him that the taijiya village has been massacred by InuYasha who was looking for the Jewel of Four Souls. Sango overhears this and is heartbroken. She storms out of the room and demands her weaponry, saying she will kill InuYasha. Naraku gives her a shard of the Jewel to dull the pain from her wounds, and then Sango sets out to destroy InuYasha.
Sango goes back to her village and finds InuYasha and his friends there. All of the other villagers are dead, so she attacks InuYasha, believing that he killed them. The shard in Sango's back makes her more powerful than a normal human, and she is nearly a match for InuYasha. However, her wounds are severe, and he is able to subdue her even after she trips him and stabs him.
When Sango wakes up, they convince her that Naraku is the enemy and that they're on her side. Soon afterwards, they learn that the Shikon Jewel was created in Sango's village during Midoriko's battle against the yōkai armies.
Sango soon learns the truth about Naraku when she sees that he resurrected her little brother as a mindless slave. Now she travels with InuYasha and his friends to defeat Naraku and save Kohaku.
She loves Miroku and accepts his proposal that they get married if they ever defeat Naraku, even though his behavior is not likely to change.

Special Attacks
- Hiraikotsu (飛来骨) - The name of Sango's giant boomerang, and also the name of the attack using it. It was made from the bone of a yōkai, and this makes it nearly unbreakable and powerful. 'Hi-' means 'flying', 'rai-' means 'come' and '-kotsu' means 'a bone'.
- Yōkai Paralyzing Poisons (毒分, dokufun) - Sango's knowledge of various poisons (particularly ones that affect only yōkai) is extensive, and she employs a few different kinds throughout the series. She wears a custom-fit gas mask to protect herself from some of the more potent ones.
- Dagger gauntlet - Hidden in the sleeve of her kimono is a retractable dagger, but she rarely uses it.
- Katana - A weapon that she sometimes uses in close combat or if she loses Hiraikotsu, but she prefers her main weapon.
Friends
- InuYasha - He feels sorry for her first, but comes to greatly respect her skill as a fighter.
- Kagome - She and Sango quickly become friends, particularly because they are the only females in the group.
- Shippo (Shippō) - One of her good friends and travelling companions, but Shippo is generally much closer to Kagome and Kirara.
- Miroku - A lecherous young monk. He tries to move in on Sango frequently, but gets shot down each time, due to his groping and his attention to every other young woman the group meets. They actually make good partners. In a later episode, he proposes to Sango, which she accepts. However, she then has to shoot him down just like any other day by asking if he would stop asking other girls to "bear his child".
- Kirara (Spelled "Kilala" in the English anime) - Sango's "pet", who looks like a small cat and can transform to a huge flying fire cat. Kirara is fiercely loyal to Sango and it is strongly hinted at in the anime that Kirara was also once the companion of Midoriko, creator of the Jewel of Four Souls, which means Kirara is very old.
