Santa Fe County is a county located in the state of New Mexico. As of 2000, the population is 129,292. Its county seat is Santa Fe6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 4,949 km² (1,911 mi²). 4,945 km² (1,909 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.08% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 129,292 people, 52,482 households, and 32,801 families residing in the county. The population density is 26/km² (68/mi²). There are 57,701 housing units at an average density of 12/km² (30/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 73.52% White, 0.64% Black or African American, 3.08% Native American, 0.88% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 17.74% from other races, and 4.07% from two or more races. 49.04% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 52,482 households out of which 30.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.50% are married couples living together, 11.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.50% are non-families. 29.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 3.01.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.10% under the age of 18, 8.10% from 18 to 24, 29.70% from 25 to 44, 27.30% from 45 to 64, and 10.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 95.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $42,207, and the median income for a family is $50,000. Males have a median income of $33,287 versus $27,780 for females. The per capita income for the county is $23,594. 12.00% of the population and 9.40% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.20% of those under the age of 18 and 9.70% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
