The Saulteaux First Nation of western Canada is a branch of the Ojibwa, Ojibway, or Chippewa people. The Saulteaux were first encountered by Europeans near the site of present-day Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario (whence their name"people of the falls", initially Saulteux in French, distorted to English Saulteaux), but they moved west with the expansion of the fur trade and now live in Saskatchewan.
