Scandinavian folklore - Definition and Overview

Scandinavian folklore, i.e. the folklore of Sweden, Norway and Denmark, has evolved from Norse mythology, but represents a later development.

It is notable that the race of Dwarves has more or less disappeared, whereas the belief in Giants and Trolls was retained.

The Elves of Norse mythology was changed into a race of beautiful women who lived in mounds and mountains, with an elven king (cf. fairies).

Other supernatural beings that are found in Scandinavian folklore are the Nix, the mylings the Huldra or skogsrå, the Vetter and tomte or Nisse.
