Scandinavian death metal describes a particular style of death metal that emerged from Finland and Sweden in the late 80's. The early works of bands such as Dismember and Demigod shaped the distinct sound that would remain popular in the region until the mid-90's. During this time, a newer, more mass-marketable approach to the familiar Scandinavian style was gradually supplanting the original. Popularized as "Gothenburg metal" and pioneered by the likes of In Flames and Opeth, its kid-friendly sound quickly caught on with people who had previously avoided death metal. "Scandinavian death metal" had taken on a whole new meaning in the mainstream mind, and needless to say, a lot of people were pissed.
