Scooterboy Scooterboy

Scooterboy - Definition and Overview

Originating in the UK in the 1980s, scooterboys followed on from Mods and Skinheads, with an enthusiasm for Vespa and Lambretta scooters, often cutdown or standard. They attended rallies in UK seaside towns in their thousands. There was no hard and fast fashion rule, however many resembled Skinheads but with regular hair or psychobilly style quiffs or flat tops. They wore MA-1 Flight jackets adorned with patches from the rallies attended and bar towels sewn onto the seat of their combat trousers. Many also wore Doctor Martens boots and Fred Perry polo shirts. They listened to a variety of music styles including ska, two-tone, psychobilly, punk, Oi!, Northern Soul and various others. Favourite tracks included "Surfin' Bird" by The Trashmen and "Tony Blackburn" by Binky Baker, which were often played very loudly from stereos fitted into the glovebox of the scooter in the early hours of the morning at the scooter rally campsite.
