Scottish Militant Labour - Definition and Overview

Scottish Militant Labour (SML) were a minor political party operating in Scotland in the 1990s. They were formed when Militant Tendency abandoned its entryist strategy towards the Labour Party.

A strictly Trotskyist organisation their leading member was Tommy Sheridan. The party was successful in winning a number of council seats in Glasgow in the 1995 unitary authority elections.

In 1996 they led the formation of the Scottish Socialist Alliance, the precursor of the modern Scottish Socialist Party (SSP), formed in 1998. Members of the former SML still form the basic leadership of the SSP today.
