A half track similar in appearance to the larger Sdkfz 251. It is distinguished by having 4 roadwheel axles, compared to 6 for the 251.
As with its larger brother, the initial design consisted of multiple angled plates providing good ballistic protection against small arms fire but being expensive to manufacture. Later models were much simplified in design.

A large number of variants were produced.
