Sega CDX - Definition and Overview

Sega CDX

The Sega CDX (named the Sega Mega LD in Japan and Multimega in Europe) was a video game console released in 1994 combining the Sega Genesis and Sega CD into one unit, just slightly larger than a portable CD player. The unit could double as a portable CD Player with control buttons (Play, Stop, etc.) on the front of the console as well as a backlit LCD to provide the track number. An extra line out port was provided for stereo equipment. It could be powered by 2 AA batteries for music cds only. The unit must be plugged in to play video games. Sadly, it was never well supported by Sega and died a quiet death much like the portable Sega Nomad.

The package

CDX gives a stereo in-ear headphones, stereo audio/video composite cable, a 6-button joystick and a power cable with battery re-charge capability. Three games includes in a package too: Ecco the Dolphin CD, Sega Classics Arcade Collection, and Sonic CD.

Compability

CDX plays CD-G format and normal Audio CDs without a TV, like a portable player. There is also a unending question of whether or not a Sega 32X actually worked with the CDX. Sega has printed in the 32X manual that it does in fact work, but later printed a retraction to that. Some people have been able to get a 32X to work, while others have not.
