Seleucus of Seleucia - Definition and Overview

Seleucus (or Seleukos) of Seleucia (c.190 BC - ?) was a Greek philosopher born in Seleucia, on the Tigris. Teaching around 150 BC, he was the only known philosopher of his time to agree with the heliocentric theory of Aristarchus, which stated that the Earth rotated around its own axis which in turn revolved around the Sun. He also correctly theorized that tides were caused by the Moon, although he believed that the interaction was mediated by the Earth's atmosphere. Seleucus is known from the writings of Plutarch.
