Seminole County is a county located in the state of Florida. As of 2000, the population is 365,196. Its county seat is Sanford, Florida6.

History

Seminole County was created in 1913 out of part of Orange County. It was named for the Seminole tribe of Indians. The name "Seminole" is thought to be derived from the Spanish word cimarron, meaning "wild" or "runaway."

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 893 km² (345 mi²). 798 km² (308 mi²) of it is land and 95 km² (37 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 10.63% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 365,196 people, 139,572 households, and 97,281 families residing in the county. The population density is 458/km² (1,185/mi²). There are 147,079 housing units at an average density of 184/km² (477/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 82.41% White, 9.52% Black or African American, 0.30% Native American, 2.50% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 3.06% from other races, and 2.18% from two or more races. 11.15% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 139,572 households out of which 33.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.30% are married couples living together, 11.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.30% are non-families. 22.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.59 and the average family size is 3.07.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.40% under the age of 18, 8.40% from 18 to 24, 32.00% from 25 to 44, 23.60% from 45 to 64, and 10.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 95.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $49,326, and the median income for a family is $56,895. Males have a median income of $40,001 versus $28,217 for females. The per capita income for the county is $24,591. 7.40% of the population and 5.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.60% of those under the age of 18 and 6.60% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
