Senatus consultum ultimum - Definition and Overview

A Senatus consultum ultimum ("Final decree of the Senate") was a decree of the Roman Senate during the Roman Republic passed in times of emergency. It was adopted after the end of the Second Punic War as a replacement for the dictatorship.

It was first passed during the rise to power of the younger Gracchi brother in 121 BC and subsequently during the Catiline Conspiracy, Clodius' desecration of the rites of Bona Dea in 63, and finally when Julius Caesar crossed the Rubicon in 49.
