A republic that existed from 1800 to 1807 under joined Russian-Turkish sovereignity in the Ionian Islands. It was the first time Greeks had had even limited self-government since the fall of Constantinople in 1453.
In 1797 the islands were transferred to France but in 1799 the Russian Admiral Ushakov, with the help of the Ottoman Empire, took them. In March 21 1800, the Republic of Seven Islands (or Septinsular Republic) was proclaimed. The Republic was obliged to pay tribute to the sultan.
In 1807, after the peace of Tilsit, the islands were returned to France.
