Septo-optic dysplasia - Definition

Septo-optic dysplasia (SOD) is a congenital disease manifested by abnormal development of the optic disk, pituitary hormone deficiencies, and frequently by the absence of the septum pellucidum.

Symptoms may include blindness, hormonal problems, and seizures. Some children with the disease have normal intelligence, but others have learning disabilities and mental retardation, and in any case tend to be developmentally delayed due to visual or neurological problems.
