Sergey Uvarov - Definition

Sergey Semionovich Uvarov (Уваров, Сергей Семенович in Russian) (September 5,1786 — September 16,1855), Russian statesman, Count (1846), Honorable Member (1811) and President (1818-1855) of the Russian Academy of Sciences, member of the Arzamas society.

In 1811-1822, Uvarov was a curator of the Petersburg educational district. During the reign of Nicholas I, he became one of the pillars of the reactionary regime. In 1832, Uvarov was appointed Deputy Minister of Public Education. In 1833-1849, he held the post of the Minister himself. Uvarov was the one who had come up with the formula "Orthodoxy, Autocracy, Nationality" (officially, it was called Теория официальной народности (Teoriya ofitsialnoi narodnosti), or Theory of the Official Nationality), which would be the basis of his activities regarding public education. Uvarov stood for impeding access to education for the people of the non-noble origin and strengthening governmental control over the universities (see University charters in Russia) and gymnasiums.

Despite the reactionary measures, Uvarov is mainly responsible for laying the foundations of high-quality education in Russia and reinstating the practice of sending the Russian scientists abroad.

Uvarov is also known for having published a number of works on Ancient Greek literature and archaeology.
