Seven Dials - Definition and Overview

Seven Dials is a small semi-pedestrianised road junction in the West End of London. The largest road passing through it is Monmouth Street.

The term also refers informally to the immediate vicinity of the junction, although this is a somewhat historical usage. In the Nineteenth Century, Seven Dials was one of the most notorious slums in London, and was described by Charles Dickens. Now it is a prosperous mainly commercial neighbourhood, on the fringes of the West End Theatre district and the fashion-focused shopping district which is centred on nearby Neal Street.
