The Shakya (or Sakya) were a clan of Hindu kshatriyas. The Shakyas lived near the foothills of the Himalayas. Perhaps the most famous Shakya was Siddartha Gautama, the Buddha. Chandragupta Maurya also claimed to be a descendent of Shakyas.
