She (ethnic group) - Definition and Overview

The She (畲) people are an ethnic group. They form one of the 56 ethnic groups officially recognized by the People's Republic of China.

They are the largest minority in Fujian. They are also present in the Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Guangdong and Anhui provinces.

There is a Xiaocang She Nationality Rural Township (小沧畲族乡) in Lianjiang County of Fujian province.

The She language is a Hmong-Mien language. Most of the She today speak Chinese dialects. Those who retain their own language - just a few hundred in Guangdong province - call themselves "Hone" (Chinese: 活聂 huóniè).
