Shin splints are a condition where there is pain in the anterior tibia caused by overuse of the legs. It is usually found in active individuals who do a lot of running. The pain is typically in the upper, anterior tibia and is worsened by exertion. There may be slight tenderness of the affected region.
If the shin splints are ignored and the individual continues running, over a long period of time, he or she is at increased risk of stress fractures at the site of the previous shin splints.
The treatment for shin splints is rest. Running and other strenuous lower limb activities should be avoided until the pain subsides and is no longer elicited by activity.
A bone scan may be useful to confirm the diagnosis of shin splints.
