Shinŭiju (Shinŭiju-shi) is the capital of North P'yŏngan Province, North Korea, on the border with China. The city is near Shinŭiju Special Administrative Region, which was established in 2002 to try introducing the market economy.
Geography
The city is on the border with China, which is marked by the Yalu River, which empties into Korea Bay at this location. The city is connected to Dandong, China by bridge via the Sino-Korea Friendship Bridge (also known as the China-Korea Friendship Bridge). This is one of the only ways to enter North Korea. The city is an endpoint on the Gyeongui railroad line (known as the P'yŏngui in the North).
Originally only is the strip is located northeast Korea the safe north small village. In 1910 opened as a river port. In 1924, Japan Imperialist ruler, in order to facilitate to the railway plunders northeast Chinese resources, the administrative was moved from Uiju to this village, and form a new name : Sinuiju. In 2003, becomes special administrative zone.

Facilities in Sinuiju include Sinuiju High School, Sinuiju Commercial High School, Eastern Middle School, a well equipped Sinuiju Light Industry University and the Sinuiju University of Education. Famous scenic sites include the Tonggun Pavilion, Waterfall, and Hot Springs.
Industry
DPRKs important light industry center, is equipped with Textile Mill, Paper Mill and an afforestation factory and so on, its southwest harbour has a shipyard.
