Shoeburyness is a town in southeast Essex, England, situated at the mouth of the river Thames. It is within the administrative boundaries of the Borough of Southend-on-Sea.
It is also a fictional term coined in a humorous dictionary written by
Douglas Adams The Meaning of Life and there refers to the vague uncomfortable feeling you get when sitting on a seat which is still warm from sombody else's bottom.
The eastern terminus of the London Tilbury & Southend Railway (now known as c2c, and colloquially to frequent users formerly as 'The Misery Line')is at Shoeburyness railway station.
The Ministry of Defence site at Pig's Bay is situated nearby.
Shoeburyness is the home of the famous Shoebury Boys Football Club, who in the 1980s were by Far the classiest boys' team in South-East Essex.
