Silkair is a subsidiary of Singapore Airlines and is based in Singapore. It flies from Singapore to cities in Southeast Asia and South Asia.

History

The airline had its roots as a regional air charter company in the form of Tradewinds Charters at its formation in 1976, using planes predominantly leased from parent Singapore Airlines. Scheduled services were introduced when it leased MD-87 airplanes. A major marketing over haul was done in 1991, giving the airline its present name, and utilising the new Boeing 737-300s introduced just a year earlier.

Fleet

The ten-plane fleet comprises of six Airbus A320-200 and four Airbus A319-100 aircraft.

  • Chittagong Service launched on 31 March 2002, with 3 flights a week every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, and suspended sinde 19 January 2004 due to low traffic.
  • Hatyai/Pattaya
  • Jakarta suspended since July 1999
  • Makassar Service launched in November 1995, and suspended since 26 March 2003 due to low yields.
  • Vientiane
  • Pekanbaru, which was suspended due to a lack of aircraft, but talks are on-going for the route to be reinstated.
