Silverchair Silverchair

Silverchair - Definition and Overview

Silverchair (originally called Innocent Criminals) is an Australian grunge band. Its members are Daniel Johns, Chris Joannu, and Ben Gilles. They were formed in Newcastle, New South Wales, the sixth-largest city in Australia, 160 km north of Sydney.

The group was originally a four piece group, including Tobin Finnane. The group met at Ben's garage to play covers of Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and others. However, Tobin moved overseas, and the band became a trio.

Silverchair came to national notice after winning a JJJ demo-contest with the song "Tomorrow," enjoying much attention during the grunge hype of the early 1990s. After the win Silverchair quickly released their debut album Frogstomp, which although referred to as "light-grunge" by many critics went platinum in the US. The follow up Freak Show is much darker, heavier and "grungier", but did not reach the same level of success as Frogstomp despite the popularity of the single Freak.

The third album, Neon Ballroom, diverged from Freak Show by adding a greater amount of experimentation and piano/string arrangements. Leaving the darkness and negativity of the previous albums behind, Diorama was written and produced entirely by Daniel, yielding a positive and unique sound barely recognizable from their old days of grunge, featuring string and orchestral backing. The single Luv Your Life was a great success, featuring a colourful animated music video reminiscient of The Beatles' Yellow Submarine.
