Silviu Brucan is a Romanian Communist politician that became a dissident of the regime in 1989 and after the 1989 Romanian Revolution became a political analyst and author of books on communism and Eastern Europe.
He was an ambassador of Romania to the United States and the United Nations, as well as the head of the Romanian Television.
In March 1989, together with other six communist dignitaries, he signed a letter in which they criticised the policies of Nicolae Ceauşescu, after which he was arrested and interrogated by the Securitate and then had his forced residence in the outskirts of Bucharest (in Dămăroaia -- he became later known as the "Oracle of Dămăroaia").
He was part of the National Salvation Front during the 1989 Revolution, but later distanced himself from them.
