Sir Ernest Gowers - Definition and Overview

Sir Ernest Gowers (1880 - 1966) was a British civil servant, now best known for work on style guides for the writing of the English language.

He edited the 1926 second edition of Fowler's Modern English Usage. His own The Complete Plain Words was published in 1954, expanding Plain Words, a guide to the use of English from 1948. He wrote also on capital punishment.

He was the father of composer Patrick Gowers and grandfather of mathematician and Fields Medallist Tim Gowers.
