Sir John Orde, 1st Baronet (17511824), was the third son of John Orde, of Morpeth, and was born on 22 December 1751. He joined the Royal Navy and was eventually promoted to Admiral of the Fleet. He served as Governor of Dominica from 1783 until 1793. and on 9 August 1790 he was made a baronet. In 1797 he became so exasperated with Admiral Sir John Jervis that he challenged him to a duel. As a Vice Admiral in 1805 he commanded a squadron of six ships of the line off Cadiz. From 1807 until 1812 he served as Member of Parliament for Yarmouth.
