Six-man football - Definition and Overview

Six-man football is a variation of high school American football played with six people on each team instead of eleven.

It was developed by Stephen Epler, a high school coach in Chester, Nebraska in 1934 during the Great Depression as an alternative for smaller high schools. It spread to Texas in 1938 where it gained its greatest popularity.

It is a fast moving game played on an 80 yard (73 m) field instead of 100 yd (91 m). All players are eligible to be receivers. On offense, there are three linemen and three backs.

The state of Texas has over 110 teams, and the number is on the increase. The sport is also on the rise in New Mexico, Colorado, and even Canada.
