Skittles (candy) - Definition and Overview

Skittles candy

Skittles are a small round candy, originally from the United States. Sold either in packets or in cup-shaped containers, Skittles come in several varieties, including original, tropical, berry, mints, and sour, each with five different colours and flavours. A favourite of children, Skittles have made multiple appearances within pop culture, including in The Simpsons. Skittles are also well-known for their advertising campaigns. Often associated with rainbows (due to their colors), Skittles slogans include "Taste the rainbow", and there have been several television commercials, often considered some of the best in the genre, centering on surreal scenes, presumably set in Ireland, with happy people joyously receiving a bounty of Skittles raining from the sky. Skittles are also commonly used by teachers to demonstrate probability (using the color distribution).

Skittles were mentioned in The Simpsons, as the ingredient in a fictional alcoholic concoction known as "Skittlebrau". To this day, some mistakenly believe it is a commercially produced product.

If you buy skittles in the UK they are made in Poland, where Masterfood makes them for export to many EU markets. There is at least one company which has the support of American candy manufacturers and is registered and based in the United Kingdom.

In 2004, Skittles bubble gum was introduced. Also in 2004, Skittles introduced a product made in partnership with Lip Smackers, Skittles-flavored lip gloss.
